With COVID still directing the way we live our lives, mental therapy is such an important aspect to address. Unfortunately, mental therapy and seeking help isn’t discussed too often in public. With this series of mental therapy posts, I wanted to give thanks to the local heroes in the health care industry – whether it be the frontline workers within the hospitals, but also the professional child psychologists who are also great sources of help in keeping us (and our kids) mentally strong during these times.

You will feel helpless, but your child should not see that because they will give up even before they start to fight. As such, you need to be in control and stay calm as that alone will encourage your child. Being relaxed will help you talk to your child gently and soothe them. For children, your calm and control are reassuring even amid the overwhelming fears they have. They will feel safe, and panic attacks will gradually subside.

The benefit of this method is that the child learns to change their mood completely. After the process, parents can observe dramatic changes in the child, such as elevated mood and decreased anxiety. DBT, on the other hand, helps the child regulate their emotions. The method allows the child to understand their emotions, feelings, and behavior as well.
