The (Much Needed) Spotlight on Edmonton’s Child Psychologists: Behavioral and Anxiety Therapists

Edmonton’s Child Psychologists and the Support They Offer During COVID-19

With COVID still directing the way we live our lives, mental therapy is such an important aspect to address. Unfortunately, mental therapy and seeking help isn’t discussed too often in public. With this series of mental therapy posts, I wanted to give thanks to the local heroes in the health care industry – whether it be the frontline workers within the hospitals, but also the professional child psychologists who are also great sources of help in keeping us (and our kids) mentally strong during these times.

Please note: I am not a child psychologist, but this information is here to share with my experiences or from my conversations with other Edmonton parents who have been able to share their experiences. I do suggest consulting professional within the field for specific solutions which may be of benefit to you and your family.

What Does a Child Behavioral and Anxiety Therapist Do?

All children, regardless of age, go through emotional episodes. It is entirely normal for them to experience sadness, anger, and even frustration. Raising my little girl has been quite a learning experience. Watching her grow helps me learn more about her emotions and behavior as well.

However, as parents, we have to closely examine the regular emotional episodes and behavioral issues in our children. A child behavioral and anxiety therapist would tell you that children between ages 0-5 are not only physically but emotionally fragile as well. Below are some essential areas that every parent should consider to protect their child’s mental health.

How to Help a Child Having a Panic Attack

Over the years I have spent raising my girl, I have realized that she pays attention to everything I do and my actions. I think it gives her comfort when I am in high spirits as she knows I’ll always be there for her. During a panic attack, a child is frightened, but they also observe everything in their surroundings. It is difficult for a parent to watch a child go through such trying moments, but that is the test. You will feel helpless, but your child should not see that because they will give up even before they start to fight. As such, you need to be in control and stay calm as that alone will encourage your child. Being relaxed will help you talk to your child gently and soothe them. For children, your calm and control are reassuring even amid the overwhelming fears they have. They will feel safe, and panic attacks will gradually subside.

Types of Pediatric Counseling and Therapy Services

There are various types of pediatric counseling services designed to meet the unique needs of different children. I always want to set my child on the right path and ensure she is given the correct treatment approach. The counseling services include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Family-Focused Treatment (FFT)
  • Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT)

Usually, unresolved problems may tamper with the child’s development. CBT is one method used to help children with depression and anxiety. The benefit of this method is that the child learns to change their mood completely. After the process, parents can observe dramatic changes in the child, such as elevated mood and decreased anxiety. DBT, on the other hand, helps the child regulate their emotions. The method allows the child to understand their emotions, feelings, and behavior as well.

Effective Child Therapy

Children are sensitive beings, and they need protection from their parents. Even citing a local Edmonton therapist, they would tell you that it is essential to focus on long-term and short-term treatments for children and their families. The common evidence-based treatments for effective child therapy include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The main goal is to develop resilience in children and an internal sense of stability as well. If your child is struggling, please don’t hesitate to seek the help of an expert.
